Yet not far into the process, a curious thing started happening. During morning runs, ideas for the book began appearing in my mind like Internet pop-ups. I quickly became Gretel in sneakers, scooping up metaphors, snippets of dialogue, and even fully hatched plot twists, which I couldn’t wait to weave into my narrative the minute I returned to my computer.

Just six months later, I finished and sold my first novel, Little Pink Slips.

All you need to know about multivitamins

In this day and age of food-on-the-go, supplements can add much-needed nutrients to your diet. He worked out four times a week in a gym cycling on a stationary bike, lifting dumbbells and doing hundreds of sit-ups to attain his New Year's resolution of having "six-pack" abs.
He ditched the junk food and scarfed down 16 hard-boiled egg whites, one and a quarter pound of meat and four cups of vegetables a day.

After six months of diet and workouts with a trainer, the fruits of his labor surfaced from his stomach in June. He got his six-pack.

But months later, reality set in. After relaxing his diet and fitness routine, Dinant's six-pack whittled down to a two-pack.

Click here to read the full story.

The 10 most expensive diseases

10. That’s roughly 20 years longer than the life expectancy of the rest of us. But we could live that long, too, says Walter Bortz II, MD, a clinical associate professor of medicine at Stanford University: “What’s holding us back are bad habits.”

Luck and genetics play roles in longevity, of course, but you can’t control that. To hike your odds of hitting 100, focus on what you can do, like loading up on fruits and veggies (add five years), working out five days a week (add two to four years), and cutting down on stress (may add up to six years). View the slideshow.

(Check out our <a Studies have shown that people who were constantly stressed out during childhood have an increased risk of being depressed.

How exactly are the two related? Stress at a young age permanently alters the expression of a key gene in the brain, resulting in a lifetime of elevated levels of a hormone that contributes to depression, according to a study published last week in the journal Nature Neuroscience. To figure this out, a team of German researchers stressed out baby mice by separating them from their mothers for three hours a day during their first 10 days of life. Other mice were kept with their mothers continuously, to serve as controls.

Click here to read the report.

Tips To Prevent Cancer

Either we like it or not, cancer affects most of us directly or indirectly. For instance, flossing can add a year to your life – a whole year – just by adding to your daily routine. Turns out there's a pretty clear link between gum disease and heart disease. Flossing is your best bet at stopping that. Here are a few more: A low-dose aspirin a day could add two years, and limiting your coffee intake to two cups a day could add another year. Simply checking blood pressure regularly could add one and a half years, and exercising three times a week could add three years. Those who are assigned to the class but do not complete it cannot graduate.

Calculate your body mass index

Now that the first class to have this requirement imposed is nearing graduation day -- students who entered in the fall of 2006 -- the school faces criticism from both students and outsiders about the fitness class policy.

One of those students is Tiana Lawson, 21, whose recent editorial in the student paper has drawn national attention to the issue. Lawson wrote in The Lincolnian that she would be more understanding if the requirement applied to everyone. You may now be able to target those aging areas on your own without leaving the comfort of your home.

The new device was developed by Palomar Medical Technologies Inc. and will be marketed through retail channels by Johnson & Johnson Consumer Cos. Inc. There is no prescription necessary. The new device will be Palomar’s initial entrance into the consumer market. The company currently sells its large light-based equipment used for cosmetic treatments to health professionals. Details of the product are being held under wraps for now, but the company is excited about the opportunity their new product offers. Joseph P. Caruso, a chief executive for Palomar said, the new laser product "opens up a tremendous opportunity to tap into the multibillion dollar consumer skin care market with our patented technology."

Read more here at Health News

Using Cell Phones, Internet to Battle Eating Disorders

People with an eating disorder may not want to attend a support group or meet with therapists, but a new report raises the prospect that "remote therapies" via e-mail, text messaging or through Web sites could help them recover.

In the new report, published online Nov. 19 in The Lancet, researchers pointed out that it can be difficult to find treatment. They examined so-called "self-help" interventions and found that with some professional oversight, these treatments could help people with bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder, although there's some doubt about the effectiveness of the treatments.

Anorexia nervosa, in which people eat little or nothing, is an exception, the researchers said. For people with that condition, counseling and dietary therapy remain the ideal treatments.

There don't appear to be many treatment advances on the horizon, the researchers noted. "Overall, apart from studies reporting pharmacological treatments for binge-eating disorder, advances in treatment for adults have been scarce, other than interest in new forms of treatment delivery," they concluded.

Read more here at U.S. News

Preventing H1N1 at the Hajj

Saudis take serious measures to prevent the spread of swine flu during the Hajj.

Saudi Arabia has been preparing for the influx of millions of pilgrims. CNN Health repots:

"When I heard the story it was hard to believe. Epworth is one of the poorest townships in Zimbabwe. It has a high prevalence of HIV, more than one in four are infected, and yet despite this high number, the stigma against people with HIV is horrendous.

Women especially get the worst of this. USA Today reports:

"The results are very clear," says lead investigator Allen Taylor of the Medstar Research Institute. "Niacin was superior."

The study involved just 208 people, but it was so carefully designed that even the expert called upon to critique the trial, John Kastelein of the University of Amsterdam, said "I fully support" the result.

Read more here

CareData Reduces Medical Errors and Enhances Support

While medical errors are a problem in today's healthcare system, there are fully integrated EHR/PHRs to help reduce medical errors and give support, such as CareData Solutions Corporation.

Medical errors are a common problem in today's healthcare system. Capital Women's Care, located in Maryland, used to be no exception. Beverley Barros, an office nurse for seven doctors at Capital Women's Care, explains that when she first arrived on the job, the office was about eight months behind in follow-up. "There was paper everywhere," she says. In desperate need of a solution, Capital Women's Care found CareData, an all-in-one EHR solution. CareData provides affordable healthcare IT solutions to ensure proper follow-up and tracking, compliance, and reduction in medical errors and costs.
Falling Through The Cracks

With CareData, Beverly explains she was able to find important information, such as pathology reports and abnormal test results, which fell through the cracks.

Before CareData, there was no way to know if there had been follow-up on a patient with abnormal test results.

With CareData, Beverly utilizes the recall list to note that a patient needs follow-up. "It's one of the biggest victories," she says. "The reduction in medical errors."

"One of the best things about CareData is the computer support system," Beverley concludes. "Whenever we've had a problem, someone has always contacted and corrected it within twenty-four hours."

Capital Women's Care has utilized CareData for six and a half years. The creator and CEO of CareData, Selene Kepila, has spent over eighteen years perfecting this software, and is the recognized expert in the IT health industry. Over 1,000 clients have discovered CareData, which integrates GlobalPatientRecord, the web-based PHR solution that records and securely stores patients' personal health records. Together, they offer a complete integrated system that bridges the gap between patient and provider.
